Help & FAQ

A quick guide to finding songs, making a list, and keeping the music moving. Choose a topic or open a question below.

Getting started

What is Aux Roulette?

Aux Roulette helps you find something to listen to when you don’t know what to play. Explore one shared, curator-maintained collection of real songs, with exact Spotify or SoundCloud links. No visitor account is needed.

What can I do here?

Pick one song with Song Roulette, assemble requests with Create a Queue, generate a list with Build a Set, or explore Playlists. Music Explorer connects genres and moods; Release Timeline explores sourced release dates. The separately hosted Game Room has its own games and rules.

How do I pick a song?

Choose a category, or leave the selection on Anything goes, then press the pick button. Aux Roulette selects an available song from the published collection.

Before your first pick, set generation, or queue addition, you’ll be asked to review and accept the Terms of Use.

Can I describe what I want to hear?

Yes. Open Pick Your Poison and try a genre, decade, or keywords such as party singalong or relaxed cooking. Search tolerates small typos and common aliases such as dnb, hiphop and 90s. Suggestions explain keyword and close matches. Searching does not select a category or combine categories automatically; choose a result, then spin. Favorites narrows the search to your starred categories.

Why did a song repeat?

The picker normally excludes your most recent 20 songs across categories. If the matching pool runs out, older exclusions are relaxed so picking can continue. A category with only one eligible song can repeat it.

Recent history belongs to your browser session and does not follow you between devices.

What do Previous and Next do?

They browse songs you’ve already picked. They do not draw another song or change the order used to avoid recent repeats.

Sets, queues & playlists

How does Create a Queue work?

Search the published collection by title, artist or version, or browse Genres, Decades, Vibes and Occasions. Add to queue puts a song at the end of your list. In queue means that exact recording is already there. Different remixes, covers and rerecordings remain separate.

On mobile, Add songs opens a search sheet that stays open after additions. View queue returns to your ordered list. Add to queue on a roulette pick and Add set to queue also append without replacing your existing requests. A queue holds up to 200 distinct songs; additions beyond that limit are skipped with feedback.

Move songs using their drag handles or Move Up/Down buttons. Choose a song to select it, or use Select next song to advance without starting audio. Earlier entries remain available. Remove changes only your browser queue, with an Undo action for the most recent removal.

The queue is restored for your browser session when storage is available. It is not a shared listener-request room or a Spotify account queue. Optional Connect Spotify adds Spotify search and lets you save your queue as a private playlist. Spotify currently limits this connection to approved test accounts.

How does Build a Set work?

Choose any genres, optional decades and vibes, and a count from 1 to 50.

Selections within a group broaden the match. Different groups narrow it together. For example, selecting House and Dance Pop includes songs from either genre; adding the 1990s limits those matches to songs assigned to that decade.

If fewer songs match than you requested, we show the available songs and explain the shortfall.

Can I change individual songs?

Reroll replaces a song using the set’s original filters and excludes songs already in the list. If no alternative is available, your set stays intact.

Remove takes a song out of your current set without removing it from the shared collection.

Changing filters does not silently rebuild an existing set. Generate again to apply them.

How do Playlists work?

Curated Playlists offers ten selected, ordered mixes. Category Playlists shows every active genre, decade, vibe and occasion, including small and empty categories. Counts show currently available songs and refresh when you open Playlists, return to this tab, or select Refresh collection.

Add all to queue appends missing songs in the displayed order. Shuffle & add all randomizes the newly added songs; existing queue contents and order stay intact. These actions recheck the live collection. The queue holds 200 distinct songs: if the whole addition cannot fit, nothing is added and the remaining capacity is shown. You can remove queued songs or choose individual songs. If a selected song is unavailable, its place is shown and whole-playlist additions pause until it is available again. This does not create a Spotify-account playlist or start playback.

How are the playlists created?

Curated Playlists are deliberately selected, ordered mixes. Category Playlists gather the currently eligible songs assigned to a genre, decade, vibe or occasion. A song can belong to several categories. Originals, remixes and rerecordings remain separate. Songs marked Occasions only stay in their occasion collections and are excluded from ordinary picks and regular category pools.

Do playlists update automatically?

Category collections on the website reflect published catalog changes. Their Spotify playlists are synchronized automatically when eligible songs or category assignments change. Spotify can take time to catch up; the site shows pending, retry or stale status when applicable. SoundCloud-only songs stay on the website and cannot be included in a Spotify playlist.

The ordered curated mixes are maintained separately. Synchronizing a playlist does not discover or approve new music for it. Review preparation is scheduled for the 1st and 15th of each month. Curators approve proposed changes before publication, so mixes do not automatically change on those dates. Refreshes preserve each mix’s identity, with at most 15% of its songs replaced per review (up to three in a 25-song mix). A review can leave a mix unchanged. A Spotify playlist you create from your personal queue is a copy of that queue at export time, not a live subscription to our catalog.

How many songs and categories are available?

The counts below come from the current published collection, rather than a fixed number in this FAQ. Different versions count as separate songs; a song may appear in more than one category. Active category totals include empty categories. Reload this page for a fresh count.

Does my set become a Spotify playlist?

A set starts as an on-site list. Add it to your queue, then optionally connect Spotify and choose Create private playlist. Nothing is exported automatically; playback is not controlled.

Accounts & saving

Do I need a Spotify account?

You can pick songs, build a set, create an on-site queue and browse the collection without connecting Spotify. Music-service links and previews are subject to that service’s availability and account requirements. The optional Connect Spotify flow enables Spotify search and creating a private playlist from your queue; it is currently limited to approved test accounts. Connecting Spotify does not create an Aux Roulette visitor account.

Can I create an Aux Roulette account?

Visit Your account for current signup availability. Where enabled, verify your email and choose your username and display name. An optional public-ranking preference controls whether eligible scores you explicitly save can appear on a leaderboard. Accounts do not grant editor or game-host permissions, and the public music tools and guest games remain available without an account. Sets and queues still stay in your browser; account-based music-library synchronization is not available yet.

Will the site remember my choices?

Recent picks, generated sets, your queue and selected mode use browser session storage. The current button phrase and unfinished shuffled group are remembered in this tab, too. Category favorites, sound preferences, welcome dismissal and the Terms acceptance record use persistent browser storage.

These records are not synchronized between devices. Browser settings, cleared site data, or unavailable storage may prevent restoration.

Can I favorite a category?

Open Pick Your Poison and use the star beside any category. Favorites shows your saved categories without changing the selected filter. Song counts reflect the current published collection and refresh when you reopen the picker. Favorites stay in this browser; if storage is unavailable, they work for the current visit.

Can I save my sets and playlists across devices?

Not yet. Sets and queues currently stay in this browser’s tab session, subject to browser restoration and storage settings. There is no account-based saved library or cross-device synchronization. To keep a Spotify copy, add songs to your queue and use the optional Create private playlist action when your Spotify connection is available. Nothing is exported automatically.

Why am I being asked to agree again?

The browser-only acceptance record lasts up to 12 months. You may also see the agreement again after clearing site data, changing browsers or devices, or when materially revised Terms require renewed agreement.

Listening & troubleshooting

Why won’t a Spotify link open?

Primary Spotify links request the exact recording in the Spotify app. Use Web player to open Spotify’s web player in a new tab if the app is unavailable. Your browser may ask permission to open Spotify.

A song may also be unavailable in your region or account. Opening a link does not guarantee automatic playback.

How does Preview work?

Preview opens Spotify’s official embedded player. Press play inside it. Availability, duration, and account requirements depend on Spotify; full-song playback is not guaranteed.

How do sound effects work?

The speaker control enables or mutes locally generated interface sounds and sets their volume. Sound is attempted only after an interaction; browser restrictions can prevent it. These effects are separate from Spotify playback. Reduced-motion settings simplify the reveal; the website does not record microphone audio.

What does the year beside a song mean?

It is the year supplied for that Spotify album edition. It may refer to a reissue or compilation rather than the recording’s original release.

Can I use a selected song on my stream?

A recommendation is not a music license. Check the permissions and platform rules that apply to your intended use.
